The UK needs to build new, gas-fired power stations

So said Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, in a statement last week New gas power plants needed to bolster energy supply, PM says – BBC News to ensure the country’s energy security.

The arguments include that many ageing gas-fired power stations need to be retired and, whilst the transition to net-zero carbon is ongoing, new ones can act as an insurance policy for times when renewable energy sources cannot be delivered to meet demand.

Upgrading the national grid infrastructure to deliver energy created offshore to onshore locations will be massively expensive too, will take time and admitted by experts will require a high number of additional pylons.  Laying underground cables is estimated to cost four times as much as the already enormously expensive overground infrastructure.  All highly political, expect to see legal challenges and arguments, and the consequent delays in implementing the required infrastructure.

There is, of course, another way to deliver energy security, which many can take control of for themselves.  “Energy-Independence!”
